Discontinued Desktop 3D Printers for $5K

(From Boing Boing)

Attention schools and hobbyists: 3D Systems acquired the assets of Desktop Factory and per this announcement, the Invision LD 3D-Modeler printer has been discontinued and the remaining inventory is being sold off for $5,000 apiece.

The printer uses Laminated Object Manufacturing (LOM) to produce relatively low-resolution 3D models (the media is 0.15mm (0.0059″) thick) with the cleanup process entirely physical (no heat or chemical based secondary processing required). At five grand, it’s pretty hard to beat.
