Tuesday morning started early with a 7am start for the Judges of the International Plastics Design Competition. A special panel of judges were invited to award the special IDSA/Plastics News Design Award, in its 12th year (actually 11th since the competition wasn’t held last year), that recognizes the contributions of industrial designers to product development. The prestigious award with be given as the finale to the awards ceremony Wednesday evening.
About 1995, the M&P began a participating in the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) Structural Plastics Division’s annual conference, helping to raise the manufacturing community’s awareness of industrial design and the value these professionals bring to the table. Every year, the SPD (now the Alliance of Plastics Processors) holds its annual conference that features, in addition to technical seminars, a New Product Design Competition that recognizes innovative applications of plastic materials and molding technologies.
Ten years ago, we introduced a new award co-sponsored with Plastics News magazine. The IDSA/Plastics News Design Award recognizes excellence in design and its application of materials and technology to advance the product’s aesthetics, functionality, manufacturability, and profitability. Through this award, we want to highlight how industrial designers contribute as critical members of the product development team and that good industrial design is a significant element to a product’s success.
