Next week, Makerbot will start shipping their Cupcake 3D printer. Right now, you could buy it before it starts shipping for $750… but their web site already says they’re OUT OF STOCK… *sniff*… But another batch o’ bots are planned to ship on September 3rd… so keep checking back so you can place your order.
This little printer is a complete 3D Printing kit–meaning it comes with all the little motors, bits and pieces you need to start printing. The usable build area is fairly small at 100mm W x 100mm D x 130mm H (3.93″ x 3.93″ x 5.12″), but it’s pretty accurate with a X/Y resolution of 0.085mm (.003″). It spits out layers of plastic, so the quality is about what you’d expect, but the nice thing is that it can use ABS, so you can get it smoothed out pretty good after the part’s printed. Check out the little dodecahedron they make in the video after the jump.
At 750 clams for a mostly-complete system (you still need to supply a few cables and a power supply, or you can pay another $200 for the deluxe system), it’s not a bad deal. If you get one of these, let me know how well it works and send me some pics of the models you make. Thanks.
