This 1967 Australian Industrial Design training video, while a bit corny, really does hammer home just how multi-disciplinary our profession is. It spells out all the various skill sets a good ID needs to have to be successful–including a solid understanding of materials, manufacturing and engineering. Notice that the absence of CAD doesn’t seem to be such a detractor from the overall message.
